Established in 1975 with just seven orphaned elephants, the orphanage has since become a breeding ground where some of the original orphans now witness their own calves being born on the premises. Collaborating with local and international elephant experts, Pinnawala initiated a successful captive breeding program, resulting in the birth of the first baby elephant in 1984. A particularly captivating experience is to visit during feeding time, witnessing the bottle-feeding of baby elephants, followed by the entire herd bathing in the nearby river. After exploring the wonders of Pinnawala, the journey continues to Dambulla.
